--Chats--
(chat conducted November 4,1996)
moderator:
Welcome to Lifetime Online's Real Time Chats! Lifetime Online is pleased
to welcome Michele Lee, actress/writer/producer/director of our Lifetime
original movie, "Color Me Perfect." moderator: Now let's welcome
our guest this evening, Ms. Michele Lee. Good evening Ms. Lee, thanks for
joining us! michele: It's great to be here! moderator: Could you please
tell me what inspired the movie "Color Me Perfect" michele: The
thing that most inspired the movie was the need for a feel-good movie in
a time that sees a lot of prejudice, stereotyping, and all types of discrimination
moderator: How did you get started in your career? michele: I started as
a singer, singing professionally from the time I was 16, and found myself
on Broadway, in a musical when I was 18 years old. moderator: Do you miss
singing and dancing? michele: yes. Music is I think at my core. I love
all kinds of music, and one day, hopefully, I will be back on the Broadway
stage again. I sang with Columbia Records for years, and did nightclubs,
as well as the musicals I did on stage. And I love singing in the shower!
moderator: which do you like best - singing, acting, writing, directing,
producing, ....? michele: I'm laughing hard! Let's see: I think, again,
at my core, is a three-year-old Michele Lee Dusick who sang in her parents
living room to any relatives who would listen. So I guess performing is
still my number one love. moderator: do you feel your movie is more for
people with mental incapabilities or those who strive for perfection? I
haven't seen it since it's on tomorrow.. can't wait michele: No. I think
my movie is simply a statement about accepting all people for who and what
they are. michele: That we all are special, each and every one of us. It
almost has nothing to do with any one disability at all. Why do we have
to change people to make them what we think is acceptable? My character,
Dina Blake, was perfectly happy when we first meet her in the beginning
of the story. She is perhaps healthier emotionally than any of the other
characters as we examine them throughout the film. I think everyone will
fall in love with Dina. There is something very special about the way she
looks at the world, and an innocence about her that many of us would like
to get back to. This movie, by the way, is a beautiful love story, also.
We see Dina as she "matures" dealing with the complications of
her newfound feminine nature. michele: One more thing: For those who haven't
read the synopsis, Dina is transformed by genetic therapy into a woman
with a very high IQ living in the complexities of our world. moderator:
Next question: Do you feel this movie will give new insight on the issues
it presents? michele: I hate to say no! New insight? I'm not sure it's
intended to do that. It's merely to illuminate the question of acceptance.
moderator: How much are you like your character, Karen, on Knots Landing?
michele: We are very much alike. And we have great legs! We are shooting
"Knot's Landing: the Miniseries" right now. We started on Saturday.
We are working weekends because Kevin Dobson is doing a series in Toronto
so he is flying in to shoot "Knot's" on weekends. moderator:
Is enough being done in hollywood to bring good roles for women? michele:
I think they're in a rut. One of the reasons I wanted to do this movie
is because it is different than the sameness that we seem to be producing
for television today. michele: The movies and the titles of the movies
sometimes feel interchangeable. Lifetime has done a wonderful job in attracting
different kinds of material. Dina Blake was a joy for me to play as an
actress, because I was able to take this character and watch her change
physically, from the way she walks, the way she dresses, to even her hairstyle.
I had three wigs and several different makeup designs. The wardrobe was
altered my appearance in the initial stages of the movie. I wanted Dina
to look more childlike, more round, so that we could almost see her go
through puberty. But more important than the physical, I think, is the
message I tried to convey with this material. It has to do with dealing
with the higher part of ourselves, while at the same time always entertaining.
Unfortunately, movies very often these days remind me of the 11:00 news,
which can be pretty depressing, if that's the only option you have. I don't
mean to sound negative; I don't like to bite the hand that feeds me. moderator:
do you think it is similar to the movie Phenomenon with John Travolta?
(minus the physical changes of the character) michele: There are remarkable
things being done in Hollywood with extraordinarily talented people. Well,
the thing that is perhaps alike is that the character is transformed during
the course of the movie. Both start out with an IQ of fill-in-the-blank,
and both become a genius. I think that the fun of watching both these movies
is imagining what it would be like to go through the same thing. moderator:
where are you from, michele? and where did you train for acting? michele:
I was born in Los Angeles, California, although my family came from New
York. Actually I was conceived in New York, so I guess that's why I've
always bi-coastal! I haven't had much traditional training. I did study,
a little, in L.A., and because of my innate musical talent, found myself
on a Broadway stage, where I proceeded to learn my craft, watching brilliant
performances from backstage. Unbelievable! Then, of course, as one keeps
one's eyes open to all the arts, you become trained through a kind of osmosis,
if you will. moderator: We have time for a few more questions. moderator:
michele, you look great - how do you keep in shape, girl? michele: I walk
on a treadmill every day if I can. I've been working out with weights a
little. And I have to watch my diet. But, and I know it sounds corny, a
smile can take years off you. moderator: last question: what hobbies do
you do? do you surf the internet? michele: Oh gosh! I'm just getting into
the Internet. Although everyone around me has been surfing for a while.
The one other issue about the movie is suspense. It is a very suspenseful
movie- What will happen to Dina? michele: I'll remind everybody that they
should vote tomorrow. It doesn't matter who you're voting for. Just get
out there and do your stuff. Then come home, sit back, turn on Lifetime
at 8 pm, and spend a little time with me. I'd love that! moderator: Thanks
again Michele, and thanks to our wonderful audience! Just a reminder, a
transcript of this chat will be available within the next day or two in
the Lifetime Chats area of Lifetime Online (
http://www.lifetimetv.com).

OnlineHost: Your Emcees for this event are Jill LE (MC3) and JaneEMC2 (MC5) .

OnlineHost: During her extraordinary performing career, Michele Lee has starred in Broadway musicals, feature films, television movies and specials, recorded hit records and starred in a prime-time series that ran for fourteen seasons. She has produced films for television and has directed hours of quality prime-time programming. Welcome to AOL Live!

McheleLee: I am real happy to be here with you all.

AOLiveMC3: Welcome To Celebrity Circle Michele Lee. We are delighted to have you with us.

McheleLee: I was a fan just as you were. I would sit home on Thursday nights and I wouldn't ever miss an episode. It was the first time I would get to watch the whole episode from beginning to end.

AOLiveMC3: Ready for some audience questions Michele?

McheleLee: Absolutely!

AOLiveMC3: this is from Elvis Eyze!

Question: Hello Michele....It is a pleasure to visit with you this evening. I applaud your work and all the tremendous talent you allow us to enjoy through your work. What one project is your wish to create or work on?

McheleLee: Does Elvis Eyze mean new projects? Well, as a lot of my fans out there know... I tried very hard to bring colorful characters with a little different television slant to the screen. My next project hopefully will be the story of Jacqueline Susann...she was the author of "Valley of the Dolls"...the all-time number one best selling novel from the 60's. She was outrageous...outspoken...complex...an icon of the 60's...and in her very dramatic life...and changing the perspective of the publishing world... led to the Jackie Collins era....today's female novelists.

AOLiveMC3: BTemmer asks:

Question: What was the toughest scene you ever did on "Knots?"

McheleLee: Ooh, gosh. The toughest scene I ever did was a scene where I stood before Sid Fairgate's grave..(my first husband)...and took off my wedding ring. Michele (me) was going through, in real life, the same situation in divorce. I was taking off my wedding ring...which happened to also be my mother's... it was very emotional.

AOLiveMC3: CCIvyA wants to know:

Question: Michele, I've been a fan for years and I'm so excited to be able to chat with you this evening. I understand your movie, "Big Dreams & Broken Hearts The Dottie West Story" is out on video. Do you know how I can order it?

McheleLee: Oh, gosh, yes. It has been a labor of love for me. I'm asked constantly where to get the video. I'm doing it privately. It's an unedited version. If you wish to order, call 1-800-722-1155. Or write Hey Jack Publishing, 10850 Wilshire Blvd., 6th floor, L.A., Ca. 90024. The price is $24.95 + shipping and handling. ($4.95.) For those who missed it, I sing the songs myself, nobody knew! Dottie West is a country singer extraordinaire legend. Kenny Rogers played himself, Larry Gatlin played himself...we had Dolly, Willie, Kris, and it was a really acclaimed, entertaining Emmy-nominated movie. Not that I'm tooting my own horn!!! Everybody buy it! I loved it!

AOLiveMC3: Audience member TJCarter inquires:

Question: Did you miss working on "Knots" as much as the fans have missed watching it? What was it like to work with the ensemble cast again?

McheleLee: It was wonderful. We're friends. It was very difficult separating from them. It was like a marriage. And it's very funny, because when we saw each other the first day on the cul de sac, it was as if we had just shot the week before. And Donna Mills' eye shadow is still the same color.

AOLiveMC3: A fan, EChirsch asks:

Question: Hi Michele - I loved you on "Knots Landing." Followed all the shows. Looking forward to this weeks reunion. How old were you when you started in the entertainment business?

McheleLee: My mother said I started singing when I was 3 years old, in my crib. I started professionally singing with a band when I was 16 years old. I sang all the way through high school--assemblies, classrooms, anytime anyone asked me! And then after school, I went right to Broadway.

AOLiveMC3: We have a question from BJames546

Question: What was the name of the movie you were in with James Farentino, where he played an abusive husband?

McheleLee: The movie with James Farentino was called, "When No one would Listen." And as many of you might know, James Farentino was my former husband. and the movie was highly-acclaimed, a true story of a woman from Denver about domestic violence. I produced that movie also, and I thought it was one of my better ones.

AOLiveMC3: Hoyle 185 wants to know:

Question: What would u like to do that you haven't already in show business?

McheleLee: Oooh, gosh, I think I would LOVE to do a comedy series. If you've seen me on different shows, and also with Kevin on Knot's Landing...you know that comedy is a part of my life. That's something I would really like to do.

AOLiveMC3: Another Knots fan ,CRESINE wants to know:

Question: What would it take to revive the series, the audience is sure alive and waiting!

McheleLee: Certainly it helps when you all watch! The show, Cresine, when it was last seen, was an absolute hit, receiving 22% of the audience. 22 share. They really never should have taken it off the air. I think they know that now! We have a huge audience out there who have been waiting for this reunion. And I'm sure that if they asked us to come back again, that many of us would without hesitation, jump. Because we really enjoyed doing the show.

AOLiveMC3: From Ising2uno, an old friend:)

Question: Hi, Michele, from an old "dance partner"; hope you remember "Five Piece Band" in VINTAGE 60. I was in the chorus; Jim. You considering ever going back to your song and dance roots?

McheleLee: Oh my god, I can't believe it!!!! ::I'm screaming!:: Yes, oh my goodness gracious. That was a song I sang in a very early show when I was a teenager! I would love to sing and dance again. They asked me constantly to come back to Broadway. When I was doing "Knots," 14 seasons, Marvin Hamlisch used to call constantly and ask me, "When is your show gonna be done already?!" LOL! I just saw him, not too President-drop, at the white house two weeks ago. And he did it again! I've been offered some of the biggest hits of the last 15 years, and I can't discuss it!

AOLiveMC3: Jim240 asks your opinion Ms Lee:

Question: Was there ever a problem with the women being so much the center of the show, I think its wonderful that the women were central.

McheleLee: No, Jim, there was never a problem. The men kind of went along with it. They still do! As a matter of fact, because the women had to, obviously, look good... the cameraman would always spend a lot more time with them than they would the men. And the men would just laugh about it! They were great!

AOLiveMC3: A major fan Jay asks

Question: Michele Lee....your talent is very natural and you are very effervescent in your performances as Karen...but yet you were able to bring to life Dottie West's life so naturally...what was your greatest challenge in playing that role? From SmilngJay

McheleLee: Gosh, let me think, Jay. I think the most difficult thing was that I was playing a woman who was so beloved, who had a dark side. I was very close to the family, and her daughter. And I had to tell the story and be respectful, and still capture the essence of her. Also, singing Dottie West took months and months of preparation. She had a sexy, seductive styling, and I wished to do an impression of her and had to adapt my Broadway style.

AOLiveMC3: This one's from audience member JFS20911:

Question: Which do you prefer-TV or theatre?

McheleLee: Let's see... I like them both for different reasons. Television is an inanimate object, however, it's much like being allowed to perform in your own head. The gratification is what you see after your work is done on film. The theatre is, of course, a live response, that is quite unbelievable. You know in an instant when the audience is with you. you can hear a pin drop.

AOLiveMC3: BENZEDRIN asks for advice:

Question: Ms. Lee what should I do to be a accomplished actor in my future, any pointers???

McheleLee: I think it's very important to be aware of the world around you. Study people. As well as read. Watch and listen to playwrights and directors. Notice that I'm not just saying "Go to a class and study." It's very important to live. Also, being an actor, I believe, takes a certain kind of commitment to a craft, and to a pretty difficult way of life. You must be prepared. So be an actor or a boy scout! LOL!

AOLiveMC3: Zach1031 wants to know:

Question: Michele: Do you think you would like to become involved in another hit series such as "Knot's Landing" and all the hard work that is involved?

McheleLee: In a minute, Zach. I love television, and I love the feedback from the fans. Many times I'll talk to people on the street, and ask them what they feel about something that I've done, so I can use it. As I answered the last question, you must keep in touch with the people.

AOLiveMC3: LegalAl asks

Question: What fitness routine do you follow to stay as youthful and beautiful as you are?

McheleLee: Treadmill, treadmill, and sex!

AOLiveMC3: Mz Lee, row 79 has something to say They have a weekly chat dedicated to you!! :)

McheleLee: Oh! Well, I wish I could be with you, 79!

AOLiveMC3: :)

McheleLee: I'm very, very flattered! And gosh, how can I get in on this stuff?

AOLiveMC3: THarris wants to say...

Question: It was so good to see all you from "Knot's Landing" on the "Kathie Lee and Regis Show" the other day. I always enjoyed your role, you and Mack because it brought truth and understanding so that so much is needed in todays life.

McheleLee: Thank you! And you're right! LOL! I think that Mack and Karen represented a middle-class, American marriage...with all its ups and downs, and laughs, and complications. And...treadmills and sex!

AOLiveMC3: BECAgirl inquires:

Question: Is there an actor that you've had the chance to work with that you admire greatly?

McheleLee: I once did a movie with Tony Hopkins, "Dark Victory," with Elizabeth Montgomery, in 19-I think-76. Something like that. I was mesmerized by him. great! We became good friends, and we are to this day.

AOLiveMC3: MRS GE a longtime fan asks:

Question: What is like to work with Joan Van Ark and Donna Mills

McheleLee: They're girlfriends! And we are always doing what girlfriends do. We talk about our men, we gossip, we giggle, we bitch! We're jealous of each other! Joan runs, Donna does eyeshadow and ballet, and I stay on my treadmill!

AOLiveMC3: WiniPuBar says:

Question: I met you at the Lori Morgan concert and I am just soooo glad you are coming back to our living rooms and to have "Knot's Landing" back (even for a short time) is such a thrill!

McheleLee: I love Lori Morgan, too! She's a friend of my husband's, who is a HUGE country aficionado. He produces many country shows. Thank you so much, WiniPu!

AOLiveMC3: LAPAUL wants to ask about Broadway:

Question: Michele, the first time I saw you was in "How to Succeed....." in the sixties. Why haven't you done more Broadway? You're perfect for it.

McheleLee: I really would love to get back and I've discussed many opportunities in the recent past with people there. I've been offered many plays but have not been able to do them. It's a matter of the right show and timing. But I believe in you.

AOLiveMC3: Misk500 has a good question:

Question: Michele, thanks for all the great characters you have shown over the years. You are terrific! I know you were in all 344 episodes of "Knots." How many did you direct and what was the toughest episode to direct? McheleLee: Gosh, I directed about 15 episodes, and the first was the most difficult, because all eyes were on me. the most serious aspect of directing for television, is the time and money elements. You must tell the story. In 6 and a half days. They must have liked me! :) Thank you. Did you all see the movie that I directed on lifetime, "Color Me Perfect?" I also produced it and wrote it and acted in it?

AOLiveMC5: I did!

AOLiveMC3: SMDAILY1 wants info :

Question: I am wonder if you would know anything about the rumored "Dallas: The Next Generation" series??

McheleLee: I think they're talking about it because "Dallas" was such a hit, and the movie was well-received.

AOLiveMC3: A "Color me Perfect" fan asks

Question: Where do you see yourself going now? And tell us about "Color Me Perfect, "your part in its creation, and why you chose it?

McheleLee: It's gonna be on again on Friday, MAY 9TH, the second night of "Knot's Landing." At 2:00. It's the story of a mentally challenged woman, who through a DNA experiment becomes a genius. It raises many moral questions. I loved living in the world of the child, and playing the role of Dina, a one-of-a-kind character. one of the reasons I chose to do the subject matter of "Color me Perfect," was because I was tired of seeing the same thing on TV, movie after movie... and I just won the Christopher award for 1997 for works of art that affirm the highest values of the human spirit. And, last week, Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless presented me with the American Women in Radio and Television's Gracie Award, for that achievement. And next, hopefully, comedy.

AOLiveMC3: LadyMdnyt wants to know:

Question: I grew up recognizing you from the Love Bug =) I would like to know what prompted you to take the role in "Married Men Single Women?" It was a little different from your other roles it seemed...

McheleLee: "Single Women, Married Men," was the first movie I produced. It was a little different. I met the real woman, Joann Bitner, a psychologist... that dealt with women involved with this social problem. And I was fascinated. I knew it was commercial, and I had to prove myself.

AOLiveMC3: LolaConle says adoringly:

Question: Miss Lee you are terrific. You seem to have such a zest for life what makes you go go go and seem so very happy.

McheleLee: I think a lot of it comes from my background, my parents. Family has always been very important to me. It buoys my spirit and they always love to laugh. Outside of that, I'm a born entertainer.

AOLiveMC3: JANCEKJK asks:

Question: I was in the audience recently when you were on Oprah and I just wanted to know how you felt about that experience?

McheleLee: I love Oprah! She is Karen! You can reach out and touch her, she's a girlfriend. She always makes me laugh, she stands for something. I like people like that. I always have fun on her show. I hope you did!

AOLiveMC3: We have a question from DReeor:

Question: Karen was always faithful to Sid & Mac. Michele, which "Knots" male character would you most liked to have been paired with romantically -on the show that is (Manny doesn't count!)

McheleLee: LOL!!! That's very funny! I love that you know Manny! I'm going to ask my husband if he did. Fred, my husband, is asking me if he's the one who fixes the cars. Then he said, "IS this the man who held you hostage?" No! Gosh, I just, I like men! And all the men on "Knot's Landing" are kindof nifty for different reasons. Bill Devane has got that "I'll get to you when I can" attitude. Ted Shackleford is just plain great-looking. And Kevin Dobson is hugable and a hunk!

AOLiveMC3: A thoughtful question from RMang8627:

Question: What is the most exciting thing about your profession??

McheleLee: Being able to perform. It was a part of me since I was very young. And I don't know what I would do if I didn't have it in my life.

AOLiveMC3: LBoyles85 also wants to know:

Question: Michele, do you still do a lot of singing? You have a beautiful voice!

McheleLee: In the shower, AND... if you want to watch me in Dottie West... I'm singing my little heart out! To order it, you can call 1-800-722-1155. And we believe there will be a soundtrack album in the fall. It's called "Big Dreams and Broken Hearts: the Dottie West Story." The unedited version.

AOLiveMC3: We have a question from Kmoehr:

Question: Hi Michele..So do you think Karen was a Pollyanna or not? I really miss your show. I am looking forward to the reunion this week. Thank you for so many wonderful memories on Thurs. nites.

McheleLee: You're welcome! Yes, Karen was a Pollyanna! The world should be rose-colored! Don't you think so?

AOLiveMC3: Rsnez asks:

Question: You seem to have so much energy all the time, what's your secret?

McheleLee: Wheaties!

AOLiveMC3: a funny one :))

Question: Michele, what was it like to slap Donna Mills? ratings!!

McheleLee: OOOOH! It was so funny. The day we shot that scene, she didn't know it, but people lined up behind me, and we kept the camera rolling. And first I slapped her, and then in walked Joan Van Ark... and then some crew people... and then Bill Devane... and it didn't mess her makeup! We all laughed!

AOLiveMC3: Knotsland asks:

Question: Michele, Is Laura coming back for the reunion? Nobody believes she is really dead.

McheleLee: Oooh... you'll have to watch Wednesday at 9:00 on CBS. The element of her death is a BIG part of the plot.

AOLiveMC3: LEE756 asks about romance:)

Question: What is your idea of a romantic evening

McheleLee: Candles... pasta... wine... and my hubby! And...........Victoria's Secret's secret!

AOLiveMC3: W1Wolfe inquires:

Question: I had read that you were going to tie up alot of old storylines. When we left Jason Lochner he was going to Sweden for a year. It was supposed to be a round trip ticket. Did anyone go to the airport and pick him up yet?

McheleLee: I love you guys! You remember everything! Do planes run on time, tell me?!

Question: Michele, any new projects in the near future? If so, indulge... I simply love your acting and your looks...

McheleLee: Hopefully I will be doing a project, a major movie on CBS about Jacqueline Susann, the novelist who wrote "Valley of the Dolls." An incredible, dramatic story. Incredible lady.

AOLiveMC3: We have a question from Star 703:

Question: Michele, which character on "Knots" was one which you really admired? From Star 704

McheleLee: Karen ................ Mack. And Sid... were extraordinary men, and I loved my best friend Val.

AOLiveMC3: We have time for one more question. DoBarbie asks:

Question: How does it feel to be famous and and share celebrity status with the best stars in Hollywood?

McheleLee: It's very gratifying to have a certain kind of celebrity. But I'm a pretty normal "guy." And the things that are important to me are probably the same things that are important to you. Being loved and having family is the most important, along with your health. I got lucky. But I worked hard.

AOLiveMC3: Ms. Lee any closing comments?

McheleLee: I want to thank everybody for supporting my career. And for the support of "Knot's" which is always unwaving. And loving my efforts and my movies, which I will continue to work very hard on., Hopefully look for me on a series on CBS in the future, and until then, we're always online!

AOLiveMC3: Thanks for being here tonight Michele. We enjoyed it tremendously.

McheleLee: Thank you for spending this time with me, and be sure to watch on Wednesday night.

AOLiveMC5: Wow, thanks Michele

McheleLee: I would stay and answer all your questions if they would let me!

AOLiveMC3: Thanks audience, for all of your terrific questions. Goodnight.

Mac, Karen, Val, Gary, Greg, Abby all returning

So who'll be back in the cul-de-sac in the four-hour Knots Landing
film? Nearly everyone, though Nicolette Sheridan may not make it.
And if she does it will be only the briefest of appearances.

But there'll be plenty of William Devane, KevinDobson, Michele
Lee, Donna Mills, Ted Shackelford and Joan Van Ark, along with
Michelle Phillips, Stacy Galina and Brian Austin Green. (Green, who
stars on Beverly Hills, 90210, was a child actor when he played Donna
Mills' son for a few seasons onKnots.)
The story?

Well, it's now four years later and when Mack MacKenzie (Dobson)
goes through his mid-life crisis, his wife Karen (Lee) struggles to
be supportive, but after the two disagree about whether or not to
tell their adopted daughterthat Greg Sumner (Devane) is her
biological father, Mack moves out of the house.

Across the cul-de-sac, Val (Van Ark) and Gary (Shackelford) Ewing
are living in marital bliss, until Kate (Galina) returns with her
4-year-old daughter who looksuncannily like Gary. Even worse, Val
becomes implicated in a murder when Clay McKinney (Michael Woods),
the Hollywood hack screenwriter with whom she collaborated on a
screenplay, is found dead.

Brian (Green) falls in love with Kate and tries toconvince her
that he would be a better father to her daughter than Gary.

Meanwhile, Abby (Mills) and Sumner are up to their usual greedy,
covert schemes when Sumner's decision to close one of his factories
prompts a lawsuit by the employees whoretain Mack to sue Sumner.
Abby, whose assets are frozen by the IRS after they charge her with
tax evasion, plots to sabotage Mack's case - in exchange for $1
million from Sumner.
